Wasgamuwa National Park

Off-the-beaten-path elephants in Sri Lanka's rugged riverside jungle

About Wasgamuwa National Park

Wasgamuwa National Park is bordered by the Mahaweli and Amban rivers, creating a lush environment in the dry zone. It is famous for its large herds of elephants, which are completely wild and less accustomed to jeeps than those in other parks. The park also features ancient ruins and a diverse landscape of riverine forests and grasslands, making it a fantastic off-the-beaten-path destination.

Key Highlights

  • Wild Elephant Herds

Completely wild, unhabituated elephant herds move through the park's riverine forests — behaviour that differs markedly from more-visited parks.

  • Mahaweli River

Sri Lanka's longest river borders the park — providing dramatic setting for riverside elephant crossings and exceptional birdlife.

  • Sloth Bear Sightings

Wasgamuwa has good sloth bear populations, visible particularly around Palu fruit season (June-July).

  • Ancient Ruins

Multiple ancient reservoir systems and ruins from the Anuradhapura kingdom are scattered throughout the park.
