The crossroads city of great rock outcrops and a fleeting royal heritage
About Kurunegala
Kurunegala served briefly as a royal capital in the 13th and 14th centuries. The city is highly distinctive because it is surrounded by massive, dark rock outcrops that resemble different animals, the most famous being 'Ethagala' or Elephant Rock. A towering white Buddha statue sits atop Ethagala, looking over the bustling city and its large, central lake.
