Horton Plains

A wind-swept highland plateau ending in the abyss of World's End

About Horton Plains

Horton Plains National Park is a protected area in the central highlands featuring sweeping grasslands, thick cloud forests, and a cool, biting climate. It is home to the famous 'World's End', a sheer cliff with a drop of about 4,000 feet offering incredible views, as well as the beautiful Baker's Falls. Early morning hikes here are a highlight of any Hill Country itinerary.

Best Time to Visit

January to March offers the clearest views. Go early — clouds typically roll in by 10am, obscuring World's End. The 9 km loop walk takes 3-4 hours. Very cold at night (bring a jacket).

Recommended Stay

Half-day (early morning)

Key Highlights

  • World's End

A sheer 880-metre cliff that drops suddenly to the southern plains below — one of the most dramatic viewpoints in South Asia on a clear morning.

  • Baker's Falls

A beautiful 20-metre waterfall set in the cloud forest along the main trail loop.

  • Cloud Forest Ecosystem

A UNESCO World Heritage site with unique montane cloud forest, home to sambar deer, fishing cats, and the purple-faced leaf monkey.

  • Mini World's End

A smaller viewpoint 1 km before World's End, offering similar but slightly less dramatic panoramas — often cloud-free when the main drop is not.
