About Kataragama

Kataragama is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Sri Lanka, revered by Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, and the indigenous Vedda people. The town centers around the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya, dedicated to the warrior deity Skanda-Murukan. During the annual Kataragama festival, the town bursts into life with vibrant processions, fire-walking, and intense acts of devotion.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round — pilgrims visit continuously. The Kataragama Festival (July-August) is extraordinary with fire-walking, kavadi dancing, and thousands of devotees but is very crowded.
