About This Journey

Sri Lanka's most thrilling dive sites in one expedition — WWII-era British and Japanese shipwrecks at Trincomalee (15–32m), the turtle-filled coral reef sanctuary at Hikkaduwa, and open-ocean drift dives with whale sharks and mantas off the south coast.

Sri Lanka's underwater world is one of the Indian Ocean's best-kept secrets. The waters around Trincomalee hold seven accessible WWII-era shipwrecks at depths of 15–32 metres, their gun turrets and propellers long since colonised by hard coral and teeming with marine life. Off Hikkaduwa, a protected reef just 3–12 metres deep shelters four species of sea turtle year-round.

This seven-day diving expedition is designed for certified divers (Open Water minimum) with a genuine interest in both wreck and reef ecosystems. Non-diving companions are accommodated with snorkelling, glass-bottom boat tours, and shore-based exploration at each destination. All dives are conducted with PADI-certified local instructors and full safety equipment.

Destinations Visited

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day1
Arrival in Colombo — Transfer to Trincomalee
🏨 Trincomalee

Arrive in Colombo. Transfer to Trincomalee on the east coast (approximately 6 hours). Check in to your dive-friendly guesthouse on the harbour. Equipment check, full wreck-diving briefing, and an early night before tomorrow's first dives.

Day2
Trincomalee — Wreck Orientation Dives
🏨 Trincomalee

Two morning boat dives at Trincomalee's most accessible wrecks. The SS Sagaing — a WWII British cargo vessel at 25 metres — is the classic introductory site, its hull now a cathedral of coral and fish. Dive briefing covers wreck protocols and emergency procedures. Afternoon: surface interval, equipment review.

Day3
Trincomalee — Deep Wreck & Whale Shark Drift
🏨 Trincomalee

Two advanced dives. Morning: deep wreck dive (28–32 metres) on one of the Japanese WWII vessels — gun turrets, ammunition chambers, and propellers visible in extraordinary clarity. Afternoon: open-water drift dive beyond the harbour mouth, where whale sharks are seasonally sighted.

Day4
Final Trincomalee Dive — Transfer to Hikkaduwa
🏨 Hikkaduwa

Morning dive at Trincomalee — a shallower wreck with exceptional light for underwater photography. Afternoon transfer down the east and south coasts to Hikkaduwa (approximately 7 hours). Check in to your reef-facing guesthouse.

Day5
Hikkaduwa — Coral Reef Sanctuary
🏨 Hikkaduwa

Two dives in Hikkaduwa's protected coral reef sanctuary. The reef begins metres from shore and extends to 12 metres — pristine coral formations, giant pufferfish, eels, rays, and four species of sea turtle. Excellent conditions for underwater photography.

Day6
Hikkaduwa & Weligama — Open-Water Pelagic Drift
🏨 Weligama

Morning dive at Hikkaduwa's outer reef. Transfer to Weligama for a final open-water drift dive off the headland — one of the south coast's best sites for pelagic encounters including reef sharks and occasional mantas. Farewell dinner at a beachside seafood restaurant.

Day7
Transfer to Airport — Departure

Morning at leisure in Weligama — optional final snorkel on the reef. Transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport (approximately 2 hours). Surface safely. Fly home.
