One of the world's most famous WWII shipwrecks, the British aircraft carrier HMS Hermes was sunk in April 1942 during a Japanese air raid. It rests at approximately 50–55 meters on the seabed off Batticaloa. Due to the depth and currents, this site is suitable only for experienced technical divers. Key highlights include being one of the world's first purpose-built aircraft carriers and showcasing massive marine biodiversity.
SS British Sergeant Wreck (East Coast)
A British oil tanker torpedoed during WWII, now resting at a depth of 22–24 meters. This wreck has transformed into a spectacular artificial reef, making it highly accessible to advanced recreational and technical divers. Divers can explore intact sections of the vessel covered in coral growth and swimming reef fish, turtles, and stingrays.

Trincomalee WWII Wreck Sites (East Coast)
Trincomalee natural harbor and its surrounding bays contain several wartime wrecks from the Second World War. Divers may encounter naval vessels, merchant ships, discarded military equipment, and historic harbor structures that are now colonized by healthy coral ecosystems.
Galle Shipwreck Diving (South Coast)
Although many wrecks near Galle are older merchant ships dating back to the colonial era, several wartime wrecks and more recent vessels can also be explored. The sites feature excellent underwater photography opportunities, reef sharks, sea turtles, and schools of tropical fish. Best season: November to April.
